- Turn off the water to the unit by the bypass valve(s).
- Turn the manual regeneration/backwash knob on the valve slowly until you notice the pressure inside the unit is released. Usually you will notice water coming out of the unit drain line and finally stopping, which lets you know the water pressure is off the unit.
- Unplug the unit from the electric source.
- Disconnect the unit from your plumbing, and move it out to where you will have room to work.
- Have someone hold the mineral tank stationary while you unscrew the control valve off the top of the tank. Counter Clockwise is the direction for unscrewing 99.9% of control valves. Also, make sure you grasp the control valve on a part of the valve that will not be damaged from the pressure of unscrewing it from the mineral tank.
- After removing the control valve from the tank, remove the riser tube from inside the mineral tank, then tilt the tank over to pour all of the excess water out that you can, to make it weigh less.
- Once you see mineral or media coming out of the tank with the water, try to catch or contain the resin or media in containers, for proper disposal.
- After the mineral tank is empty of all resin/media, you can take it outside and rinse the inside of the tank clean with a garden hose.
- If the tank is 10 years or more old, or you have a high level of sediment in your water, look closely for cracks around the top of the tank and then inside for any grooves or worn areas where the tank might be wearing thin from erosion caused by sediment swirling around in the water, inside the mineral tank over the years.
- Take your mineral tank back inside and insert your riser tube. It will self center on the bottom of the tank. Put a piece of tape over the end of the riser tube to keep the new resin/media from falling down inside the tube while you are loading the tank.
- Place the resin funnel (supplied with your resin/media) on the top of the tank and start putting the resin/media inside the tank with a scoop. If you have different kinds of media to put inside the tank, don't worry about which one to put in first, because the first time you regenerate or backwash the unit, it will classify the material properly!
- Remove the funnel after scooping in the resin/media and take the tape off the top of the riser tube. Brush any loose particles off the top of the tank and tank threads. Your mineral tank should now be 1/2 to 5/8 full of resin/media. The empty space at the top of the tank is for resin/media expansion when the unit regenerates or backwashes itself.
- Apply a very thin layer of regular vegetable cooking oil onto the top area of the mineral tank where the valve "O" ring touches the tank. This will help lubricate the "O" ring as you tighten it back onto the tank. Do Not apply anything to the threads inside the top of the tank or to the threads on the control valve!
- Look at the bottom of your control valve, and you will see a hole where the top of the riser tube inserts into the control valve. Carefully tilt the control valve over on top of the tank and make sure the top of the riser tube inserts inside the hole in the bottom of the control valve.
- Screw the control valve back onto the top of the mineral tank. (Turn the valve in a Clockwise direction). Have someone hold the mineral tank stationary for you, while you snugly tighten the control valve back onto the mineral tank. Be sure to hold the control valve where there will be no damage to the valve from the pressure you exert from tightening the valve back onto the mineral tank. Remember to snug the valve up and then snug it a bit more. Do Not over-tighten the valve onto the tank. You will feel the "O" ring seat, and that is as far as you will be able to turn the valve. Stop at that point!
- Reconnect your plumbing to your unit and plug it back in making sure to set the correct time of day. Turn the water on to the unit and check for leaks.
- Leave all faucets turned off inside the house, and open a single faucet (such as an outside faucet) letting the water run for 3-5 minutes. This rinses the new resin/media off inside the tank, and any particles or color will rinse out through the one open faucet, and not throughout your home plumbing system.
- Manually turn your regeneration/backwash control knob slowly through a complete cycle, allowing the water to run through the unit in each position for a minute or so.
- Once the regeneration/backwash knob is back in the service position, your unit is back in service and ready to operate!
