How does UV Disinfection work?
When bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms are exposed to germicidal UV light at a particular wavelength (253.7 nanometers) their reproductive capabilities are destroyed, which means that they are inactivated and no longer pose a threat to human health.
Ultraviolet disinfection systems channel water past submerged lamps that emit lethal doses of UV energy, destroying any pathogens. The strength of a dose is a product of the UV light intensity and exposure time. Not only is it safe and highly effective, UV does not change the taste, color, or odor of water. It simply removes the risk of illness caused by microbial contamination, making water safe to drink or use commercially.
The effectiveness of a UV system in eliminating microbiological contamination is directly dependent on the physical qualities and/or clarity of your water supply.
Suspended Solids or particulate matter can cause a shielding problem in which a microbe may pass through the Sterilizer without actually having any direct UV penetration.
Iron/Manganese will cause staining on the quartz sleeve that houses the UV bulb, at levels as low as 0.03 PPM of iron and 0.05 PPM of manganese. In this case, we recommend the installation of a Water Softener and/or an automatic Iron Filter system, as a proper step towards pretreatment which will help eliminate this staining problem. (Model S40Q shown). |
Calcium/Magnesium hardness in your water will cause possible scale formation on the lamp protecting quartz sleeve. Scaling problems will be especially magnified during low flow or no flow times when the calcium and magnesium ions tie up with carbonates and sulfates to form hard scale buildup inside the Sterilizer chamber and quartz sleeve. Again, the simple installation of a water softener would eliminate these type problems from occurring. (Hallett 13 shown). |
Other Absorbing Compounds such as humic and fumic acids as well as tannins will reduce the amount of UV energy available to penetrate through the water to affect the genetic material or DNA of the molecule.
Temperature is a determining factor. The optimal operating temperature of the UV lamp must be near 40 degrees C or 104 degrees F. UV levels will fluctuate with excessively high or low temperature levels. All of our Sterilight units utilize a quartz sleeve around the lamp itself to buffer direct lamp to water contact thereby reducing any temperature fluctuations. (Models SQ-PA, S1Q-PA, S2Q-PA, S5Q-PA and S8Q-PA shown). | Back to Top
Installation is very simple as there are only two water line connections and one electrical connection for the unit to be in full operation. For use in the kitchen, we recommend the ultraviolet unit be installed in the supply line coming out of the Reverse Osmosis unit and ending at the RO faucet on the sink. This is typical for a point of use application. See the Installation Guide for further detailed instructions.
As water quality differs from one area to another, and to ensure your UV water sterilizer is operating correctly, we recommend that you obtain microbiological testing on your water supply even though the lamp is lit and appears to be functioning. Your local Health Department can be of assistance to you in either doing the test for you or recommending a lab that will. (Model PRO7 shown).
Factors such as water quality, lamp life, and actual UV transmission may be affecting the actual UV output. It is recommended to have the water tested periodically to ensure you are receiving bacteriologically safe water. It is also imperative to follow the manufacturer's guidelines on water quality and operational procedures. Lamp replacement is recommended annually. |
| This table shows the amount of Ultraviolet energy required, (at 253.7nm wavelength), for 99.9% destruction of various microorganisms measured in microwatt seconds per centimeter squared. All of the UV systems we sell output Ultraviolet energy at no less than 25,000 & microwatt seconds per centimeter squared during the first year of lamp operaton. New lamps will output Ultraviolet energy in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 microwatt seconds per centimeter squared. This output will slowly deteriorate over a one year period but never fall below the minimum 25,000 value. (Lamp replacement is highly recommended every year). |

Press release about Trojan UVMAX Pro certification |
1. High output UV lamps The UV light is generated from a low-pressure, high-output lamp new to the residential and commercial UV market. These lamps provide a higher intensity of UV light making it possible to treat a given volume of water with smaller, more efficient units. 2. A unique water chamber design Trojan's unique water chamber optimizes hydraulic performance and increases disinfection efficiency. Designed by computer simulation and validated by bioassay testing, the water chamber maximizes exposure to the penetrating light. With models to treat flow rates from 0.75 to 40 gallons per minute (2.8 to 151 liters per minute), TrojanUVMax is leading the next generation of residential and commercial UV systems. 3. New power supply technology Electronic advances in Trojan's power supply offer flexibility over a broad range of voltage supplies (90-265v). In addition, it can withstand fluctuations in voltage that most power supplies are unable to tolerate while maintaining lamp intensity to ensure continuous disinfection. 4. TrojanUVMax reminds you to replace the lamp To help remind you when to replace the lamp (it is important to do it once every year), Trojan has incorporated visual and audio signals. And, at any time, the display will tell you how many months the lamp has been in use. Should your lamp ever fail, your system will automatically sound an alarm. 5. New UV intensity monitoring device The TrojanUVMax Plus and Pro models, incorporate a brand new and innovative UV intensity monitoring technology. The new design enhances the reliability and accuracy of this optional safety feature. Flow restrictor* (optional) water treatment dealer for for more information. 6. Certified by NSF International Both models of the TROJANUVMAX Pro have been tested and certified to NSF Standard 55 Class A. This is the only UV system to have met the rigorous requirements of this Standard. This is your assurance that the TROJANUVMAX Pro will provide safe drinking water.
