Easier to install than steel, and over time, much tougher to beat

The WellMate WM Series offer features and benefits that steel tanks just can't match. From their corrosion-proof composite construction to their lighter weight, easier maintenance and less expensive installation, the WM Series pressure tanks are the preferred choice of professionals. Especially when the following advantages are added to the mix:

  • Replaceable Air Cell for easier field servicing
  • Greater Drawdown than comparably-sized steel tanks for greater efficiency
  • Extended Labor Warranty Option (purchased by homeowner direct from manufacturer)
  • Won't rust in corrosive environments which is particularly important in agricultural and livestock applications, and coastal regions
  • Quicker and less costly to install, usually requiring only one person and fewer man-hours
  • Wider Pressure Setting Differential for greater flexibility

Installation Notes
1) All WellMate pressure tanks are shipped factory set with a charge of 40 psi inside the tank.
2) The installer of the pressure tank should adjust the pressure in the tank, for their particular installation. The WellMate pressure tank should be set to approximately 2 psi less than the application's lowest pressure switch setting. For example, adjust pressure tank air pressure to 28 psi if using a 30/50 pressure switch or 38 psi if using a 40/60 pressure switch.
3) Maximum external operating temperature 120F (50C). Maximum internal operating temperature 100F (38C). Minimum operating temperature 40F (4C).

In keeping with current industry standards, drawdown factors are based on Boyle's law. Actual drawdowns will vary depending upon system variables, including the accuracy and operation of the pressure switch and gauge, actual precharge pressure, and operating temperature of the system.

There are three factors to consider when selecting the proper size WellMate for your water system:

  • The pump delivery rate in gallons per minute (gpm)
  • The recommended minimum running time of the pump
  • The minimum (cut-in) and maximum (cut-out) system pressure parameters

Once these factors are known, the following calculations will determine, in most cases, the correct model to meet your specifications.*

Calculating Drawdown and Tank Size

  1. Determine your pump's delivery rate in gpm.
  2. Determine the minimum pump running time in minutes.
  3. Multiply step 1 by step 2 (this value is the minimum drawdown or available water volume required*)
  4. Determine the minimum system pressure (cut-in) in PSIG
  5. Determine the maximum system pressure (cut-out) in PSIG
  6. Using the WellMate Drawdown Factors table above, find the drawdown factor by intersecting the column and row containing the values you determined in steps 4 and 5
  7. Divide the answer in step 3 by the value in step 6 to determine the minimum total WellMate volume required
  8. Refer to the WellMate Tank Specifications table above and select the model with the closest capacity that is greater than or equal to the value calculated in step 7.

*If the volume of water needed is greater than the amount calculated in step 3, figure that amount for step 3 in place of the calculated value.

Example:
An application using a 10 gpm, 1 H.P. pump with a minimum run time of 2 minutes and a 30-50 PSIG system pressure range. (Answers below are shown relative to the 8 steps above).

  1. 10 gpm
  2. 2 minutes
  3. 20 gallons
  4. 30 PSIG
  5. 50 PSIG
  6. .30 factor (from table)
  7. 66.7 gallons
  8. WM23 model

Well-X-Trol Professional redefined the industry with its advanced engineering and innovative product design including the pre-pressurized well tank, sealed-in air charge, and unique water chamber design. With proven performance since 1963, Well-X-Trol Professional offers many unique features that result in consistent, reliable performance, including design elements that prevent tank corrosion and reduce wear and tear on the well pump.

  • Exclusive butyl diaphragm, along with the 100% corrosion resistant virgin polypropylene liner, are secured by a positive hoop ring seal for added strength and reliability. This totally integrated system outperforms other type of water chamber designs.
  • The stainless steel air valve and water system connections are brazed rather than threaded to prevent loss of air pressure.
  • The finest quality, custom mill steel is used in the deep drawn dome for extra strength while keeping tank weight to a minimum.
  • More options and sizes than any other well tank manufacturer, including both vertical and horizontal designs, and sizes ranging from 2 gallons to 119 gallons

Stainless steel air valve is brazed in position rather than mechanically threaded to prevent loss of air pressure and to minimize stress on the well's pump system. It also carries a tamper-evident warning label.

Deep-drawn steel domes offer twice the strength of rolled steel while minimizing weight.

Unique positive hoop ring seal secures diaphragm and liner for added strength and reliability.

Heavy duty butyl diaphragm features seamless construction for uniform strength and flexibility. It conforms exactly to the shell configuration without stretching, creasing or forming bubbles or corners that could trap water or sediment. Butyl is the best known elastomer to prevent air loss.

Heavy duty butyl diaphragm is extremely resistant to bacterial growth and meets FDA requirements for potable water supplies.

Virgin polypropylene liner provides a 100% corrosion resistant, non-metallic rigid water reservoir that is listed by NSF International Standard 61.

Copper-lined acceptance fitting is silver brazed resulting in a watertight and airtight seal.

Exclusive welding process eliminates interior rough spots and sharp edges which prevent damage to the diaphragm and liner.

Each finished tank is pressure tested for safety and is pre-pressurized to the most common pump cut-in pressure.

Exterior appliance-like finish looks attractive while protecting the tank from the elements.

Installation Notes
1) The installer of the pressure tank should adjust the pressure in the tank, for their particular installation. The pressure tank should be set to approximately 2 psi less than the application's lowest pressure switch setting. For example, adjust pressure tank air pressure to 28 psi if using a 30/50 pressure switch or 38 psi if using a 40/60 pressure switch.
2) Maximum external operating temperature 200F.

The ESP (Effective System Protection) sizing procedure covers modern residential water use habits, increased off-peak demands and the general increase in water use that have occurred over the past twenty-five years.

ESP sizing is designed to reduce pump wear and tear, and reduce energy consumption by keeping pump starts to a minimum.

ESP I: Tank selection is based on approximately one minute minimum pump running time which is recommended for pumps up to 3/4 H.P.
ESP II: Tank selection is based on approximately two minutes minimum pump running time which is recommended for 3/4 H.P. pumps and larger.

Determining Tank Size

  1. In the 'Pump Discharge Rate GPM' column below, use the row that is equal to your pump's delivery rate in gpm. If your rate is not shown, use the next larger value.
  2. In the 'Operating Pressure' area, use either ESP I or ESP II based on the definitions above.
  3. In the appropriate ESP area of the table, use the column that indicates your pressure switch's Cut-In/Cut-Out values in PSIG.
  4. The recommended Well-X-Trol tank size is the intersection of the column determined in step 3 with the row determined in step 1.

Example:
An application using a 10 gpm, 1 H.P. pump with a minimum run time of 2 minutes and a 30-50 PSIG system pressure range. (Answers below are shown relative to the 4 steps above).
